– Call a suicide hotline number — in Canada, For Children and Youth call Kids Help Phone 1-800-668-6868 (toll free), For Adults call Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of BC  1-800-SUICIDE (784-2433) Toll free, anywhere in BC)
– Reach out to a close friend or loved one

Helping a Loved One

It is difficult to watch our loved ones suffer. If your loved one is showing signs of mental illness, it is important to invite an open and honest discussion with them to share your concerns in a respectful and loving way. By offering support and encouragement you can let your loved one know that they can find help. Sometimes when someone is suffering with mental illness they are not able to seek out a qualified health care provider on their own. This is where you can help. You may even support your loved one to get to their appointment or to go with them.

If your loved one has done serious self-harm or is considering doing so, it is important to act immediately by taking them to the hospital or calling for emergency help
